Hello I'm new to BYC and I'm a beginner in chicken keeping. I have two nullified pekin bantams (freckles and speckle) twelve week old. I have a black australorp which I believe is about a year old (hazel hen) and two of her chicks (bramble and cheeky) three weeks old. Hazel layed her first egg since we got her a few days ago which was beautiful and tasted amazing she announced when she was laying.

However, today she has just layed her second egg and it has a hole on the pointy end!

I feed her layers pellets and give her fresh water daily as well as grit and oyster shell, for an occasional treat she gets a smidge of bread or corn. She is also cleaned regularly and I do a poo pick up every day or every other day to keep her clean. She has access to dust bathing and has her own home built pen of which she free ranges.

Am I doing something wrong? What is this hole in the egg. I hope she is ok I love her too pieces. Please help. Thanks xxx

glad you have joined us.

If you still have the egg in question, please post a pic showing the hole and maybe someone can advise on the cause?

Hello thank you for your warm welcome.
I am having trouble posting a picture, I select the photo and then press submitted and a message comes up saying embedding image and then when it's finished the picture hasn't come up? Maybe this is because I'm doing this from my kindle fire?? Xx

When you say the egg has a hole in it. Does it look like it was pecked from the outside? Some hens become egg eaters, and not only is it a bad habit to break but, the other hens will see her doing it and do the same.

Hey it doesn't look like a rock I dont think cos there is no cracks in it it's like a perfect hole the size of a small pea right on the point of the egg. I'm trying to post a picture but when I submitted the pic it doesn't show up
