My eggs did not hatch yet. Please help

My pigeon eggs did not hatch and it is day 20 today of their incubation. At the beggining of there incubation it was pretty cold and it is still now but not as cold outside. The first egg that was layed by the mother is somwhat big but not to much bigger than the other egg which was laued one day later. Does this have any affect on the hatch date???


All signs are still good, the egg has stayed white with not black spoges which means it has not gone rotten. I feel sad because this would be my first ever hatch.

Also i started the incubation date the day after the 2nd egg was layed.

Am i overeacting?
what can affect the hatch date?
Are there any signs the eggs will hatch eg. color, shaking?

Please help me

I had birds who eggs have not hatched up to and including day #25 I would not panic yet.

If this is their first try at raising young it is quite common for the first eggs to be infertile.

If it has been cool that can definitely delay the hatch day by a few days.

You will see a crack in the shell or pipped here is a link showing what it looks like (the white duck egg in the middle):

When they have pipped they usually break out of the shell in about 2 more days give or take.

Also 20 days is just a rule of thumb when it comes to a hatch date.

Breed of pigeon also plays a factor you will find (not by much usually).

I would candle the eggs to see if they are near ready. If they are dark in colour and do not allow light readily through (outside of an air sac they are ready to hatch).

If they are clear toss them and in 10 days you should have another clutch of eggs in a perfect world.

These will have a better chance of hatching in my estimation.

thanks, today is day 21 and still no hatch, I am planning to leave the eggs there untill the parents get tired of sitting on them, I hope they will hatch though. It is the first time with eggs togeather. I will keep use updated on anything happening. Just one last question.

If they do hatch late will the be any difformaty's in the baby/Squab?

Also if i do candle them will the baby die because im shaking the egg around and will the parnents accept the egg back?

I personally have never had any deformity on a squab that was a late hatch that I can recall.

I have had pigeons abandon a squab because it was lacking vigor. I have question and raised birds that parents abandon.

I have found through personal experience that the parents were usually right in their call because the squab most times died before it reached adult hood. Or if it did reach adult hood it was at the low end of the pecking order. I still do it however even though it could be damaging my gene pool.

Candling the eggs have no ill effects on the squab. If you watch your pigeons closely on the nest you will notice that they in fact turn the eggs daily to ensure proper development of the squab.

I have never to date had a pigeon abandon an egg after I had removed it to check on it. (I have had pigeons for 2 years now and when I was in or near my teens I had them as well for 10 years maybe not exactly sure how long).

As you once stated before you have waited this long already and the pigeons have a natural instinct that tells them their eggs are bad. I think you have made a wise decision on your plan.

I hope they hatch for your sake but I suspect their first eggs were duds.

I always candle my first time egg layers after one week to avoid this exact same problem.

I am almost positive you will have better results in round 2 in a perfect world.

Have you checked your eggs for pipped???

If not you should soon see egg shells outside the nest if they are going to hatch.
