My Emus

Oh yeah, the roll is epic.

Truth to tell – though I am inordinately fond of my emus – 'elegance' isn't the word I'd use. They roll like a drunken sailor when they walk, and they look like wingless flamingoes gone wrong when they run.

I'm thrilled to read that others have seen The Dance! The very first time I saw my emus do it – only ever at dawn – I thought that either they or I had been nibbling on the wrong sort of bush. Farmchick897, could you film The Dance? I'd be deeply impressed to see footage of it.

Question: how big are the bigger enclosures? I ask because my birds – at least when younger – used to indulge in a wild dawn ritual of chasing each other (and dancing). They'd run HUNDREDS of yards, around and around the farmhouse. I've seen them come into sight two hundred yards from the house, circle it, and disappear into the gums afterwards (then come back for breakfast).

Concerning the rolling: I'm intrigued to consider whether how the emus' tameness is relevant to this. I've not seen mine do it. However, on a couple of truly memorable occasions, they have gone from Full Relaxation Mode (on their bellies, with necks resting on the ground) to Lie on Their Sides in Ecstacy in the Sunshine Mode, with one leg cocked incongruously in the air.
