My Experiences with Quail

The embryo's can handle some cooling down and an hour and a half will probably only delay your hatch by that amount of time. I doubt it did much damage and if it did you might only loose a few of the weaker ones. Good luck!

My 5yr old woke the family @ 5 this morning with "a baby chick hatched", I went to look and sure enough there is one lonely chick in there. We were still waiting for the pop corn effect that I have read about when we all had to leave for work and school.

Here is a bad picture of our first chick.

Oh, I'm so excited for you!!

I know exactly what you mean about leaving for work and school. Hopefully, you will get to see some when you come home. Or they will be pipped and zipped, and you get to see the last popping out of the shell.

Looks like you have a nice English White/Texas A&M there. You mention Jumbos, but do you know what kind?

When I think Jumbos, I always think wild type brown. I could be wrong, just my thoughts.

I was looking to get the jumbo brown Coturnix, but it look like I have some A&M mixed in with the eggs as well.

I'm always reminded of Forrest Gump with is box of chocolates, except it's "cot eggs" instead. You never know what you are going to get until they hatch.

looks awesome, i'm doing it with my sons as well.

anyway if you haven't gotten a brooder yet, the best thing i used is the big rubbermaid tubs, the ones you can buy at walmart and target, they work great, towel on the floor the first week, then you can switch them over to wood shavings, i use aspen wood shavings from petco

Here is the tub I have made into an inside brooder, plugged it in before I left for work.

Update on expenses for my quail project:

$0 - tub re-purposed from house
$0 - hardware cloth free from work
$0 - light re-purposed from yard
$2.29 - quail water base
$2.39 - chick feeder base
$2.99ea - for 2 quart bottles
$55.13 - total invested in quail

I know I could have saved money by using/ recycling something from around the house for feeder and water dish. The reason I went with purchased dishes is ease of cleaning and I want to be able to keep the brooder clean as possible for health of the chicks.

I still plan to build an outside brooder will keep everyone updated.

I put my water on one end of the brooder and the food on the other and the light in the middle. Only because they inevitably get food in the water.

I think your brooder will be good for a few days. Maybe a week, but after that, it will get over crowded. I have 35 chicks and I had to split them into two bins after the first week. The weaker chicks (for me the A&Ms) were getting trampled. Mine are 2 weeks today, and they are starting to jump out of the brooders and it's starting to look overcrowded again.

Thanks for the information, I'll separate the food and water and I have more bins if/when crowding becomes an issue.
