My Fault - Did not pay any attention while I was Setting up new pens.

Hey everyone...

Id 1st like to start by saying its my fault that I did not pay too much attention to my peafowl as I was building new cages and working with the New parrots that came in. 87 parrots to be exact. And while I was working on all the cages, poles, and fecing, I would do my normal chorse, see everyone, feed, and water... But I did not pay tooo much attention as I was thinking about the pens and cages.

So I finished Yesterday, and then did my after noon rounds, I noticed that one of the Green Peafowl, a pure cross green, was looking sad, So I caught him and Noticed that he was VERY THIN... Im talking anarexic.

When I feed the birds, Everyone eats, and drinks. and acts normal... He just started to act sad all of a sudden. I treated him for worms just to be on the safe side, and gave meds... I know I should have paid more attention to catch it sooner but He looked normal, that and I had my mind on the pens.

SO Im sorry again..

Now... my question, How can I get some weight on him? I was thinking of force feeding some Parrot baby formula. The kind I use to feed my baby parrots... Do you think this would help? Thoughts? Ideas? advice?

It could be something else that is wrong, but worms would be my first guess that has already caused blackhead. He would need antibiotics to treat them, and fairly quick. I believe it can be rapidly fatal once the bird looks sick.
I think Metronidazole is treatment of choice. May need a vet to prescribe it though to get it quickly if you don't already have some.

This is the bit on blackhead, but it could be something else that is wrong:

Histomoniasis, commonly called "Blackhead" is an infectious intestinal disease caused by the protozoa Histomonas meleagridis. Birds are most susceptible between 6 and 14 weeks of age. Symptoms are watery, sulfur-colored droppings, drowsiness, and weakness. The causative agent is shed in the feces of the infected birds and then contracted by susceptible birds as they feed from the floor and litter. Histomoniasis can be controlled by specific medication of a bird or flock at the onset of an outbreak or prevented with the use of a histomonastat, drug specific from Histomoniasis, in the feed. Presently there are no FDA approved Histomonastats. Currently, Metronidazole (Flagyl), copper sulfate, and Histostat are the medications used for the treatment of Blackhead.

Feed Medicated Chick Starter 18 or 22 % protein (it doesn't matter how old they are) add dry cat food this will also boost the protein. everyone can eat this food it will not hurt anybody.


If it is Blackhead get some Metronitozol 3 tablets to 1 gallon of water. (get from Vet)

For worming in the water use Safe Guard for Goats 3cc to 1 gallon of water.

For wormer injection: Ivomec Plus for Adult birds 1cc (bird can not already be sick)

Yes the Parrot feeding formula is what I use on all ill birds, even sprinkle some on top my my baby chicks feed for the first few days. Peafowl, like chickens can mask their true state of illness for sometime, and peafowl not typically being a bird that you handle every day, is easy to overlook illness. What type of wormer are you using on him? Use something like safeguard vs. Ivomect if you didn't already, in his weakened state, a sudden worm die off can cause more stress. Up the protein, canned dog food or wet dog food, scrambled eggs etc... what ever you can get down him. Put vitamins in his water and make sure he is drinking, you may want to mix 1/3 vitamins to 2/3 water and inject it just under the skin where neck and back meet, to help him stay hydrated. Keep him warm as when they get that thin they have trouble keeping body temps up and a heat lamp can be helpful. Best Wishes

Metronidazole (Flagyl) and Metronitozol
Two different responses with two different words. I know the first one can be found in any aquarium store or Ebay as I used it for my discus fish. Please let me know.

This is the name that is on the bottle that the Vet gave me and they said it is for blackhead. (Metronitozol)

I am not for sure what the other one is for without doing research on it.

Looks like they may be the same thing just misspelled also looks like the other one can be taken by humans, but I don't think I would.

Thanks Guys! You can get that in any fish store. I do not know if petco or petsmart carries them but the smaller aquariums usually do. Again also on ebay
