Ok, on Thursday evening, my peahen really was going through the actions of wanting to lay an egg, she scratched out nests in the chicken coop (bad place), the outdoor shelter too, but she really wanted to be in with the chickens. She can be aggressive toward the chickens, so I didn't let her back in there, it was chicken bedtime, so I locked up the coop thinking she would lay in the enclosure where she had also been scratching a nest. Well, next day, no egg and she just looked lethargic, laid around a lot. I did not see her eat or drink. She did sleep on top of the coop with the peacock last night. I had a friend come by this morning and feel around to see if she was egg bound, did not feel an egg. He suggested putting her on an antibiotic, just in case there is something else going on. My concern is what if she was ready to lay, I didn't let her in the coop, she slept on top of the coop with the peacock, and if there was an egg it was pushed back up into her, so now she can't lay it. She is alert, walking around a bit, wings down some (like she wants to lay). She is only 1.5 years old, she laid one egg one week ago, that's it, she never sat on it. Please, any thoughts? I am blaming myself for this... I hope she'll be alright.

My yearlings lay all the time but few have layed an entire clutch, they lay one here and there , last years hatch is doing that to me right now, it makes me crazy finding an egg here and there even on top of my barn in the leaf litter had 2 wash off the roof day before yesterday during a rain storm anyhow sense she already layed an egg i am thinking she will be fine, some recommend giving a calcium of some kind but i do not know about such stuff so they should be here soon to help you with that.

Hi! I always give oyster shell calcium, some in their feed, and always some in a separate dish. Thanks! I'll keep keeping my big ole' hairy eye on her. I hope she is OK. My peacock is so in love with her.

Hello and welcome to BYC! It's very easy to check to see if they have an egg if you can catch them. Just gently insert a gloved, lubed finger in their vent. You don't have to go far, just about an inch should tell you if there is a shelled egg there. These pictures should help:

Hi and thank you for the pictures!

We checked her yesterday and she did not have an egg, at least in the lower part of her 'tract' that we could feel. Interestingly, she started acting more like herself yesterday afternoon, was eating and drinking. She scratched out another nest and was in it late day into early evening. Of course, it was also in the chicken coop. I left the coop door open for her and the chickens and she were in there, she decided to leave the coop and sleep on the roof with the peacock anyway, so I shut the coop door around 9:00 pm, it was dark by that time.

Today, again, she is eating, drinking, seeming normal. I am still keeping my eye on her. Since she is in an enclosure, and she is young, and she has only laid one egg 8 days ago, I'm not sure she is 'cycling' as an adult yet, which is fine with me. I'm not really ready for chicks! I'm still getting used to mature peafowl. :)

Thank you again, I'll keep you posted.
