I am so sad because my barred rock hen is really a barred rock roo and I can't keep him. Why does he have to be the sweetest chicken of the bunch!

Also I really don't understand why, if neighbors can have dogs that bark at all hours, why I can't have a rooster.

gonna go pout a little

. I'm sorry. I feel the same way. I'm not supposed to have any chickens at my house, but people can have barking dogs, outdoor cats, pigs and let their dogs poop everywhere.

I just found out that one of my EE's who was SUPPOSED to be a lady isn't.
He hasn't crowed yet (at 15 weeks) so I'm hoping he's quiet. I'm not supposed to have a rooster either and I have close neighbors. Last night one of them had a grandchild throwing a temper tantrum in their driveway and I thought 'if i can put up with that they can put up with crowing'.

BUGGER!!!!!!!!!!!!

my hubby said he would make me a little sound proof room for Little to sleep in at night, I would tuck him in at night, and get him up around 9 or so when everyone has gone to work.... maybe??

I would certainly try it out before I let anyone tell me I had to get rid of a sweet chicken, rooster or hen. Yo never know until you try he might be real quiet. Or possibly not, but then I would wait until someone complained too. Some folks LIKE the sound of a rooster in the morning. My folks live in the city near FTW, and their neighbor has peafowl. My 84 year old mom likes that it sounds like a jungle. So keep him and see how it goes, is my advice.

I'm keeping Masala until someone complains. My neighbor has a little rooster (Polish crested) and no one has complained yet but she has a lot more property than me and a much bigger flock.
Maybe if I offer free eggs.....

I had the same thing happen. I'm keeping him - for now. I actually shut my up in the coop and don't let them out until I go down for breakfast. That IS at 6:30, but at least its not 4 am (when the wild birds start chirping). We are zoned farm, but I suppose the neighbors could still complain. HOping for a quiet crow.

Hey Montana Girl! Have you talked to your neighbors about him? We had an illegal rooster for a little over a year, and our neighbors loved him! Now that he's gone, all we ever hear is "When are you going to get another rooster?" Turns out, he was a neighborhood favorite right in the heart of Missoula!

I can really sympathize. The same thing happened to us. Our sweetest chick turned out to be a roo. He was the most cuddly one right from the start and just got more and more sweet with every day. Every time we took him out, the others would peck around and explore, but he would hop right up on our laps and snuggle in just like a cat. When he started to look more like a rooster, I tried to handle him less, knowing that I would have to re-home him someday. But he wouldn't have that! He insisted on being a lap-chicken and we loved it while we had him. I did have to find him a home and it was HARD and I cried just thinking about it. I put up an ad and got several responses, but I was careful and waited until the right person responded and found a great home for him! On the day they came to get him, I cried, I couldn't help it, but after they left, I felt wonderful knowing that he would have a flock of girls of his own and able to roam a big property in the country. They absolutely adore him and he is going to be a happy rooster and have a great life. I think that being an "accidental rooster" was the best thing that could have happened to him. I'm sure the right family is out there for little roo if you can't keep him.
