there are a bunch of breeding/vaccine papers hanging on the walls that are from around say 1997?? maybe longer... so it has been there for a pretty long time

It should be pretty disgusting! Gloves and a facemask, soap and water, then bleach and water, and dry in the sun.
If rusted through, to metal recycling. And that food in the garbage!
