My first baby chicken rescue

One of my chicks had really bad constipation when it was 7 through 14 days old. At the advice of someone on the forum, I force-fed it molasses as often as I could during those days. I just kept dipping its beak in it, and the little chick had no choice but to slurp it down. It seemed to work- definitely was better than nothing! Here is that chick now;

Best of luck.

Great pic mtchick.

I would be mad too! I am pretty peaceful and forgiving but when it comes to helpless animals that don't have a voice that people like this can understand. Arg! I get the same way about chained up or dumped dogs.

Just wanted to say way to go! It's a good story. I can't wait to hear an update.

Hey yall, well got up this morning & Lil Bit is still alive! Was eating on his (hopefully her) own

I got another hard white plug out, but still having problems pooping. I'll try the molasses, didn't think of that. Thanks MTchick
I thought I was gonna wake up to a dead chic. It's amazing how skinny that little one is,half the size of the other two.
Noticed last night they're starting to act like baby chics... scratching, pecking, around etc. They still don't peep very much

Give it time I guess.
Hopefully today Lil Bit will perk up somemore,I'll let yall know.
Later,Miriam

Oh, bayouchica, they are sweet! love jumpy
So glad you heard about them and brought them home. Just love to hear stories like this, and especially since you'd been wanting to get some chicks anyway!
How stupid are some people to leave chicks in a room as if they were part of the furniture?! I'm guessing the hotel mgr was just clueless and couldn't have cared less what happened to them in a field!! yikes
Way to go on the save! yippiechickie

I agree it seems pretty dumb to us that the babies were put out in the elements but I do have to commend the woman on at least thinking to freecycle the chicks. A year ago, I myself might have not had a clue what to do, being a city slicker

, but with reasearch and education myself and my family have become very aware of what chickens need.

Mostly, during my "pre-chicken" days I perceived that chickens were outside critters (as represented on tv etc.) and would have assumed that the babies would have been fine outdoors.

In any case, I am VERY GLAD she offered them, and they are now in a very caring and loving home

. Thank goodness there are still people in this world that care for the defenseless-you are doing a great job!

Hi again hehe

,

I just want to clarify my previous post, as I know that the written word and meaning of the written word can be misunderstood easily when typed. I in no way mean any offense. Many have commented that these people were stupid for what they did (I agree not the smartest). What I was trying to say in my previous post is that I think that with education comes compassion. I don't think everyone that sees an animal always understands that animals need-or feels obligated to find out. Even in this day and age, I have run across people ignorant of what even a dog would require for basic needs. Most of the ignorance has a lot to do with how they were raised-and some parents just do not find time in their lives for pets.

I have seen message boards disinegrate into negative places with little compassion for the newcomer or uneducated ones. One of the reasons I LOVE this board is that almost EVERY post I have read has been wonderfully helpful and friendly. The woman who freecycled these chicks did a wonderful thing in her own uneducated way. I hope we can all view this sunny side up

fowlweatherfriends, that is a very wonderful and compassionate way to look at things. Kudos! I agree it's super sad to have happened in the first place, though there is a least a silver lining in the cloud. I hope the little chickie that's having the problem feels better soon!

Good luck with your baby rescues. It must of been fate that brought you guys together. These chicks could of easily found their way into a less expeirenced hands. I wondered what feed store or maybe pet store sold these chicks in the first place. You would think they would think about who they sell their birds to. Anyway I hope the one chick makes it. You will have to give them very special names.

The woman in the newpaper sounds like she was doing what she could...

And those poor little babies.... I'm so glad they have a good mommy now.

yall would not believe what I've been getting outta my sick baby..... 2 small white plugs
hmm.png
2 small pebbles one was sharp & little one's vent bled a little.... all kinds of grit more than likely was eating it out in the field :thun
I'm still not sure if it's gonna make it.
I saw her eating this morning, but I've been giving molasses & this evening going to try some V&E with some wet feed..
When she goes to poop, poor thing is straining like it's trying to lay an egg...
So yall say a prayer ..I'm doing all I can to help Little Bit make it.. she deserves it after all they've been thru..

I'll let yall know how she's doing in morning...
Miriam
