Hello everyone,

For an early Mother's Day present, my son made me a portable "night coop" (with 2 wheels like a wheel-barrow) and a large day pen that I can move to different sections of our backyard so now I'm a first time mother hen to 2 Rhode Island Reds who are 2 months old and 3 Americaunas who are 1 month old (all females).

I've been keeping the chickens separated by a divider in each coop/pen until they get to be the same size. I let them all out in our little backyard about 1/2 hour before dark so we can all hunt for bugs together. I never thought that I would be lifting rocks to search for cockroaches and making excited "cheep cheep" noises to call the girls over. I've also tried to handle the birds each day (because I have to catch them to put them in the night coop). After I "calmly" catch them with 2 hands over their wings, I tuck them under my arm so I can pet and scratch them and offer them a piece of bread. I guess I'm learning as I go along and using trying to use bird-logic.

I've been reading, "Raising Chickens for Dummies" and other books about chickens. I discovered this forum and joined today and I'm looking forward to reading and learning from the more experienced members.

I've been on another forum for a different hobby for several years, so now it feels a little strange to be the new kid on the block and learning about something totally different - raising chickens.

Best wishes,

Vickie from Florida
