My first Chicks. I got 12 Black Australorp Babies this past Friday. The lady I got them told me that I have some 2 week olds and some 3 week olds. Here are a couple of pics in the cage that we brought them home in before we turned them loose in the coop.

thanks everybody. I'm so excitied about my little babies.

And the funny thing is when they chirp loudly my dane runs over to them and lays down by them to make sure they are ok...

Does anyone know when I might be able to tell how many boys and girls I have? And for 12 babies how many roo's should I keep if most are girls? Is there a girl to boy ratio?

barred-rocks-rock - Congrats on your babies!!

I have 10 Australorp hens and 2 Roos. I would say around 12 weeks old is a good time to start telling the difference.

Some hens will tend to have larger combs and wattles, and might fool you at trying to determine the sex.

There is a lot of BYC members on here that are pretty good at determining the sex. They sexed mine, and they were all right. You may wait and see when they tell you to post photos and they will all look at them.

keep two males so they are covered well for fertile eggs and good protection.

they are cuties. you'll be able to tell your males from females relatively soon actually. i see a male in the pic, front left. the females will have tail feathers and the males not so much at first.
