Also love the Sand idea someone gave - I was using crush walnut shell for same reason but her sand is cheaper and probably better.

I am using a pelleted cat litter called "yesterday's news" that works pretty well. It is made from recycled newspaper and it at the grocery store. The pellets are too big for the babies to eat, and when the get wet they dissolve and fall apart. I put it in about 2 inches deep and the poops dry up and get sifted to the bottom. I kept newspaper over it for the first day or to just to be on the safe side. I haven't had any trouble with it.

Almost three weeks old now. They are feathering in quite well!

All of them are doing well. I still have all eight of them. They are a challenge to tend to in the brooder now. When I open the top on it they just pour out of it and run amuck in the kitchen!

Goofy birds! They are really fun though. The white one with the green feet on the side of the brooder is the friendliest darn thing. I really hope that she is really a girl. She is the biggest one in there but is feathering out fast so I hope that is a good sign.

I am a newbie to the boards as well... we have one BO and one RIR, with 4 EE's... thanks for posting these pics!! I have one EE that is very dark like yours... it will be fun to see if they look similar when they are grown! I'll have to keep my eye out for your posts!

nice pictures. I got some chicks for Farm and Fleet too about 3 weeks ago. Must mean you are from the Midwest, but I'll bet from Illinois by the looks of your avatar? I got 3EE's and 2 California Whites from them. I also have a batch of purebred bantams assortment. I have 21 left from my original 25. But my chicks from F&F are very friendly. Are yours too? One of the Whites is constantly on the edge of my brooder box too. Flies into the kitchen and then back into the box. Finally had to put a top on it last night. Good luck with your chicks.

Like all baby animals, I wish they could stay that small.

but we all know we need eggs! and if chickens were perpetually cute little balls of fluff there would be no reason to get MORE the next spring!
