My first coop...a pallet coop.

Yeap, that's a good idea....nail it horizontally across space created by two pallets joined together or run it vertically where two pallets are joined? My pallets are on there sides...I decided they would be less top heavy that way. I would think it would be better to nail the 2X4 horizontally...which would be perpendicular to my vertical joints.

You're off to a great start. I'm pulling for you and I hope that you have a great pallet coop in the end.

How tall are you able to make it with the materials you have or plan to use?

I have plenty of pallets so I am flexible on the height, no plans, just building as I go. Cleaning won't necessarily be an issue, I am thinking of putting large swinging doors on the front to open up and clean coop out.

Howdy,

We have a pallet tractor for our 2 hens. It is 2 pallets in length and 1 pallet tall. There is an upstairs with poop board and nesting boxes. Overall, the pallets are very sturdy, if heavy. On the back, I have 3 plywood doors to allow access to the down/upstairs for easy cleaning, waterer, feeder, nesting boxes, etc. The easier it is to clean, the more you will clean, and your BRs will be all the happier!

I was suggesting laying the 12" sections down horizontally, along where each horizontal section joins to another pallet's horizontal boards.
How tall would two pallets make your coop - are you doing a gable roof, because that will add headroom too???

So, kinda like toe nailing a 2 X4 on edge to where the pallet meets the floor? Anyways, I am just going to do a non gabled roof and use a few 2X4's at the top of one wall and give the roof a pitch to the back.

I think the more I talk, the more confusing I'm making it...lol. Say you've used three pallets on each side for walls so far. Then I'd use 8 joiner 2x4 sections. I think along the floor horizontal boards AND in the middle - can't do the top because you'll be putting another layer of pallets, right? So one joiner board (midway and at floor level) between pallet one and two, and again between pallet two and three - so four on each side - total of 8. I think that would go far to making things really sturdy

Pallets come in different widths, so how high would one more level of pallets make it?? Like my pallets are 51 inches wide, so it'd be really easy to cut down one wall side to make a slanted roof and it'd still be plenty tall to walk through...
