Today i went out to feed my quail and found one dead.
They are in a secure pen.
I noticed this lump type growth above its beak pictured below. Is this normal ?

Cheers

Adriano did they show any other signs or symptoms? Was the :lump just confined to the area shown in the picture or did it involve or spread to other areas on the head/ face?

It could be like a wound that got infected and swollen up. Do your others birds have this too.
I have seen this on my birds if they have a wound on their feet , it swells up. More likely an infected area.
I don't medicate my birds so I decide to cull it if it is bad.
Good luck.

Hi all,

Firstly sorry for reply to such an old thread on your forum, I have a bird with the same beak growth as pictured by the original poster, sadly I understand his bird died :( I wondered if anyone knew what this growth was?

I've tried to bath and use bird safe antiseptic this evening as the "wound" is weeping on my bird.

Any ideas?

Welcome to BYC and the quail forums!

I have never had a bird with this ailment, however there is a condition called Rhinitis, swelling of the nares/nostrils in birds. Sometimes it is accompanied with nasal discharge and other respiratory issues, sometimes not. Did your bird have any discharge or even wet nostrils?

Many times Rhinitis is caused by bacteria, fungal infections and even too much dander breathed up the nostrils and causing blockage. Even a poor diet can cause this ailment as well.

If in the future you see this again, and it is accompanied with nasal discharge, make sure to clean the nares really well each day with warm water to keep the discharges from blocking the air ways. Antibiotics may even help with this condition.
