What did you do in the garden today?

Got out to the garden today. Yesterday was too hot. I went out there when we got home from being gone Saturday and Sunday... And there's new gopher activity at the edges of three of my beds. Go figure. I did take photos of all the end of season sad plants. They're attached below. Then the super happy Daisy gourd by the chicken run. And a tiny Mexican gherkin.

This evening I picked tomatoes, Bell peppers, strawberries and a watermelon. Got startled by a frog. I am glad I didn't step on him.

Finally grew a market sized bell pepper! First one of this size, ever! Wooo!

I took lots of photos of the stars on Sunday night. I stayed up way too late after everyone else went to bed. The fire was warm and it was too peaceful to go to bed just yet.

That toad is just too cute on his precarious perch. Totally agree about warm starry nights. I get lost in the wonder of the vastness of it all.

The hormones in my 3 baby roosters have kicked in. I saw one of four old hens being chased and mounted today, while the other three old hens barraged my baby rooster and kicked him off her. I kind of feel sorry for the old hens who kicked him off, because Roosters get crazy when they are fully matured. I guess that's nature's way of saying don't worry about it when the old hens start getting abused, that's their pay back.

Two of our BO hens each found a toad the other night. Both ate them and the one hen I thought was going to choke to death in the attempt did not. She did pause and grunt for a moment and I went to get her to pull the toad out BUT…..too late…..down it went. The unfortunate toad was about this size.

We have indigo we can grow in the US.
This brings a question to mind. Has anyone ever heard of Barberry being invasive? We have Barberry on the property and were looking to add more when we realized that it’s illegal to sell in Delaware because it is considered invasive but we can buy it in Maryland. Only reason this came up was because we live on the border of both states and sometimes try to take advantage of Delawares no sale tax. Plus we have a preferred Nursery just over the state line.
