Finally got my first egg! Actually 2 of them. Both laid by these two light Brahmas...they are such tiny little eggs :)

Now, here is the issue...they both laid them in the middle of the coop floor! Should I take the eggs and put them in a nesting box so they get the ides? Any advice welcome!

My first eggs were dropped off the roost, but they eventually figured it out. If you don't already have it, put a couple golf balls or fake eggs in the nest. I do have one that just started laying in a corner of our deck attached to my house, so we have to work on her. :(

Sometimes the first few eggs come as a surprise even to the hens because they are not used to the sensation. I would not worry about this unless it becomes a regular, on-going thing. Put a golf ball or a fake egg or even just leave a real egg in the nest to give them a hint.

If it becomes an on going problem, take a careful look at your set up and make sure there isn't anything about the boxes they might not be liking.

I have read about many people actually putting up little "curtains" to make it more dark and private...wonder if that would help...

Not sure, but the fake egg theory is that the chickens assume someone else has laid eggs in there, so it must be a safe place. In addition to this, I introduce the girls to the nest box by putting each one in there when she started to look ready to lay. Except for a couple of soft shelled "oopsies", every hen is laying in the nest box.

I tried the curtains on a few of my boxes to see if they did prefer them. I didn't see a difference in where they laid. Maybe its just my hens.
