I am a city girl so I had never had chickens before. In February, I took the plunge and ordered chicks. I ended up with 3 EEs, 2 welsummers, and 1 SLW. For the past few weeks I've been watching carefully for any sign of egg laying. One of my welsummers, Moana, seemed to mature the quickest, growing in a big red comb and wattles. A couple days ago one of my EEs, Belle, started squatting anytime I entered the run, even if I wasn't going to pet her.
Well today all my waiting has paid off! I came home from work to find a little brown egg in a nest box, next to the fake white egg.

Considering it's brown it's probably not from any of the EEs (Even Belle, who I was convinced would be first to lay with all her squatting!)
It's a tad darker than my store bought egg, so I'm thinking it is a welsummer over SLW. Of the two welsummers, Lilo and Moana, Moana is definitely the farthest matured. So I'm pretty sure it's either Moana's or Elsa's egg (Elsa is the SLW)

My favorite way to enjoy an egg is soft boiled, though I may need to fry this one. I'm worried I might over cook such a small egg!

So excited for more eggs already!
Does this mean she will continue to lay now or might it be spotty for a new layer?
Should I be hurrying to make an emergency quiche to get rid of the last of my store eggs?? Haha

There is nothing quite like getting that first egg from your own hens! I still remember that day so clearly and it was about 10 or 11 years ago for me!

A new layer will lay a bit hit and miss while her reproductive system gets into the swing of things. I remember some of my hens starting with small eggs, followed by huge eggs and then settling into their "normal" after a few practice runs.
