When I got my first layer, all the others followed soon after, so you just might have the other girls laying soon! Glad to hear you're cooking up eggs for them. I'm sure they'll get the hang of this egg laying thing soon enough. Keep up the calcium.

One thing that I did with my chickens that seemed to help was I took 6 golf balls, I painted 3 light brown & left the other 3 white. Put one white golf ball & one brown golf ball in each nesting box (I only said 6 because I don't know how many boxes you have). Do this for all of the nesting boxes, this will help them get the Idea that A. they're supposed to lay in the boxes & not anywhere else, B. when they peck at the golf ball they will under stand that they can't eat it or break it, and C. It will help them get use to the fact that there are eggs there & they have to move around them & not crush them. Hope this helps!

Thanks! I am a little confused though. At around 1:30 pm I looked in and saw Sandy, the polish/silkie mutt, sitting in the nestbox so I left. I came back at 3:30 pm and the egg was sitting there. When I went to grab it, Sandy came running in and pecked me. Did she lay this egg or something? It looks like it has to be an EE egg because of the color and it would be a pretty big egg for her.

I think she is just a broody type. Mine do this sometimes and i know they are defending other's eggs.

My white silkie, Snow, has pecked me when she was brooding nothing but straw--and she's usually super sweet! A silkie hen has an overdose of mothering instincts and isn't afraid to use them.

You might try giving them whatever veggie scraps or shells (smashed, of course) you have as a treat and a distraction when you come to collect eggs. But since their pecking doesn't actually hurt you needn't worry about it. She's just being a silkie.

Thanks guys! Maybe I can get her to hatch some eggs for me. I was going to buy some eggs to hatch for fun and give back to my hatchery so I can let her do the dirty work
