My White Leghorns and Red Sex Links were 13 weeks old and one of them started laying eggs. I saved them up and we had an egg party on Saturday....I cooked some for my DH, and two grandchildren, saving the 3 smallest eggs for myself. I tell you I felt like I won the lottery when they came out of those shells! & they came out in order 1, 2, 3! Holy Hannah! Did we ever party! Love those girlies!

Nice! Congrats on the new eggs!

I started last year. Figured 8 hens would be enough for our family of 5. Wrong! I have 3 strong layers, the rest lay fairly well. I added 3 more girls that I'm now integrating with the group. Then I got the itch to hatch a few. I have 5 eggs under her. 3 are going to the neighbor and I'm keeping the barred rock EE mixes. I have 2 in case one is a boy. They both might be boys anyways, but that is okay, I'll put an add in the paper for them to eat. The BR rooster is sooo mean and the mean gene is carried with the male.

Our limit of 2 hens turned into a total of 12. :p. That is my maximum number. I free range all day, so I do expect a loss here and there. Our coop/run is set up very well! We just double wired our run with hardware cloth to keep the door open 24/7. Sorry for rambling!

My Eight Buffs are just now reaching 17 Weeks old, and haven't Laid ONE Egg! You got Eggs @ 13 Weeks? Sheesh! maybe alla Mine are foolin me, and they are Roos?

I kept telling them that the First One Crows is gonna Meet Mr. Cleaver......Maybe they are just Keeping Quiet?

The Two of us figured Eight Chicks would end up with Six Girls, and that would be enough Eggs. ZERO as of yet!

Thanks all! I know I was totally floored that we got an egg. The first one was at the very door of the coop - like it was a surprise to the gal as well! It was cracked but the rest have been good since. I thought at first my DH was pulling a real trick on me... but no we've gotten a lil egg every day since 6/2! We got 2 RIR from my sister that are already laying so we are getting 3 eggs a day - 2 big and one small. I've finally started letting the coop door open all night.... the run is surrounded by 10' chain link, surrounded by chicken wire at the bottom, and stacked rocks the entire way around. Then a bird netting over top. I don't think I would feel comfy unless they were locked in the coop all night..... going to start free ranging them - but only when I'm there on the weekends. I've gotten so attached I'm afraid I would go into mourning if anything happened to them!
