My first experience with coturnix quail!

The little chick who had wry neck wasn't getting better at all. If anything, she was deteriorating. She wouldn't open her eyes and seemed to be struggling to breathe. She would wave her head side to side really fast and flip over and over. She had to be constantly restrained. ...I culled her today. I know she was suffering. What I think happened was her head was pinned backwards in the egg, and her spinal cord was damaged. She was malpositioned in a way that would have made it impossible to hatch on her own. From now on I won't assist any chicks that are so badly stuck. I have learned a hard lesson.

My heart hurts... :(
I think you did the best you could. We never know when the problem they are having is life hindering or simply a complication of human error. Every little chick deserves a chance at life, as long as you are able to recognize when quality of life is not good enough to continue the struggle. You did the right thing.

Well, in happier news, my eight little chicks are doing great. They eat and sleep and POOP like crazy!!! >< I have one gorgeous yellow and black tuxedo chick who is just the biggest crybaby ever. I put a stuffed dog in there and they snuggle it and sleep under it and it keeps them quiet! It's so cute it's sickening!!!

They are already getting pinfeathers on their little wings! They grow so fast.

The extra roo in my adult group started crowing a lot and chasing Ryuu (My main roo) around. So now he is in the bottom level of the hutch by himself lol. The little jerk is such a spaz... He flips out whenever we walk by and crows all the time. My DH has named him "Little Pecker"

.

That was yesterday. I have had their light on a timer (just a daylight CFL so I can see in there better) and I got my first egg today! It is so small and cute!

I will get better pictures of the hutch and quail chicks tomorrow too~

and purple!? How cool is that!

Well, yesterday one of my roos attacked two of my hens. One had a slightly swollen eye, and the other had a hole pecked in the side of her face that I could see muscle through, and her eyelid was torn too. Luckily their eyeballs are ok, but the one looks like the phantom of the opera right now :( I'm pretty sure the roo in the cage below them was just egging him on so much he flipped out. Now I have the males on the bottom level with a divider between them, and the hens up top. *Sigh* Gotta finish my other pen so I can move them farther apart.
