I finally got a picture of my babies. Unfortunately it isn't a very good one. My batteries are very low which makes the picture quality bad but I got the best out of aobut 7 shots. The one that is leaning on the rear end of another one is the one I say has sleep apnea. It will fall asleep standing up every time and if there isn't anything to lean on it's head will slowly end up on the floor while its little butt is up in the air. He will lean on the other chicks or up against the aquarium corner or on the feeder. What ever he finds. Strange chick.

sleep apnea is when you forget to breathe when you sleep.
I think you are thinking of narcolepsy--that is when someone falls asleep at inappropriate times (usually during intense stimulation or stress...).
haha had to put in my two cents, being a nursing student and all.
=]

I've seen many pics of chicks sleeping that way. In fact, I have one myself.

Thats my little peanut- he was so tiny, and weak. Had a bad case of pasty butt. (Thats why his butt is wet-he just had a hineywash)

he died when he was 5 days old

But, yes, your chickie is normal. They are strange, but oh so cute...

It is even worse if you get one that sleeps on it's back. I got one of those and even though it is not my first batch of chicks I was sure a couple of times it had died. Wait till they start "power napping". Someone on here coined that phrase and it is so true. They will be runninfg along playing and then suddenly just fall over asleep. Mid stride.

Heart attack? No. Powernap.

I have sleep apnea myself but not as bad as a former boss of mine. He would fall asleep standing up in the middle of a rush. That is why I said sleep apnea. I even named this chick after him. It almost does the fall asleep running. It will be trotting along and the next thing it slows down very fast and nods off. It is really funny to watch. I have one that is a bully. I guess they are working on the pecking order already.

my husband's step-father had bad sleep apnea and was a driver of a city bus....until he fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed the bus full of passengers!!!

you'll have to get that lil' guy a chicky c-pap machine:p

you are all thinking of narcolepsy. here is a video of a doggy with the same condition. Sleep apnea is when you forget to breathe while you are asleep. This is sleep apnea. I don't think that condition is possible in a chicken...
it happens when excessive fat tissue, or a relaxed tongue occludes the larynx. This causes the snoring sound, and can actually kill you if it is severe enough.

thought I would clarify.
