On 3/22 I put 18 eggs in a brand new Hova Bator 1583 with turner that I was testing out for my daughter's class.
I wanted to do a test run before I helped her class hatch some eggs.
The waiting game almost killed me.
I bought 12 of the eggs from a girl who raises chickens and other animals for 4 H. They were only $2.50.
I also put 6 of my own eggs from my Silkie Roo and Ameraucana Hen.
I was never able to candle the eggs. I tried but the green color was impossible for me to see through.
So, I basically left them alone. Temp stayed pretty steady throughout. On day 18 I took them out of the turner and placed them on a piece of that waffle-weave drawer liner stuff and bumped up the humidity.
Day 19 we had our first pip. First egg, a smaller egg, hatched on the morning of day 20. This was the Saturday before Easter.
By Easter Sunday around noon, we had 15 chicks!
I never thought I would get 15 chicks from the 18 eggs.
They are all healthy and doing well.
We opened the 3 eggs that did not hatch. One had a partially formed chick and 2 were just very runny yolks. What causes that to happen?
I only hope that my next attempt at school goes so well. Kind of nervous about the weekends when I will not be able to check on the eggs. Fingers crossed.
Picking up my eggs this weekend.
Wish me luck!

Congrats on an awesome hatch! Sounds to me like the ones with two very runny yolks were probably infertile. If there was no blood at all in those eggs or veins, I'm pretty sure they were. So you only lost one chick in the entire clutch and that's awesome!

Good luck with your next hatch.

May all your eggies be fertile.
