My first incubation experience!

sorry I missed your question, I would start softening starter crumble with the soup recipe. you are doing all you can. remember you cant save them all, but if its eating you have a good chance. keep its butt clean. add the sugar for a couple more days, and I think everything will be fine.

Well it's 12:30am here and I just spent an hour working on a chick. Seems he (for a lack of a better term) got away from momma and could not get back to her. He was ice cold and hardly breathing. So I snuggled him into my chest while my girls got the heat lamp and warm sugar water. I really thought we were going to loose him. Lots of rubbing, heat and sugar water later he is finally walking and chirping. When she brought him in he was throwing his head back and pointing his toes. He is now resting in a box at my bedside with a glove to snuggle up to. I wont be getting any sleep tonight :hmm

ok...update on chick 5. Found him/her this morning away from the heater lying face down, not moving! It felt cold but as soon as I picked it up it took a breath...so begins a full day of nursing. I give it a gentle rub to get the circulation going, warmed up in my hands. It started breathing again ;-) I then put it back in the incubator...took about an hour but very slowly it regained consciousness and started lifting its head. I then started every hour since then..taking it out and helping it to drink. I made a sloppy soup from chick feed and water mushed up, I then basically dipped his beak it and tried to scoop some up...took ages. Now it is standing up in the incubator, walking around a bit and cheeping....I am very happy! It is not out of the woods yet though...I will keep up the routine hopefully until I can put it back in the brooder. I am hoping it will be ok in the incubator for while longer...but for now success!
Hey, it's really great what you are doing to save him. Believe you me, you won't regret it when you see him fully grown crowing or laying eggs for you :)

Besides, I now am having a lock down after the 18 days, keeping fingers crossed :). Just waiting for the magic moment when they hatch.

chick 5 update...still here this morning. Still very unsteady on its feet but can stand up for long periods of time. I added a little sprinkle of caster sugar to the soup. It is pooping ok. I'm still a bit worried about the little black lump...pretty sure its what is left of the yolk sack. I compared it to the other chicks...they have a tiny little lump...more of a pimple in the same place so I definitely think its where the yolk sack was. The other chicks are now starting to run round the brooder really fast. My son built a sort of high ledge in the brooder box with a ramp...they love running up there and jumping off flapping their wings.

Good news Ahmedamir...day 18...not long now. The last few days did seem to take forever...I was also quite surprised how long it took from first pip to the zipping part. I thought once they started trying to get out they'd just get on with it...but they seem to make the first hole then wait several hours before the next stage.

Well...I'll keep having a go with chick 5....my kids have called it Smallie.

Nice name. Haven't named any of my bird yet, I really suck at naming them :).
One thing, though on being day 19, there's no motion or sound in my bator. Is it ok? is it necessary to have some motion in eggs or some chirping sounds?

Mine stopped moving on the that few days...they were wobbling around before that. I think that's normal. You should start to get your first pip soon, mine was day 21 when they started.
Chick 5 (Smallie) is still going, hasn't really grown any and it still quite unsteady. I saw food in its crop earlier so decided just to give water on the last feed...I thought if there was already food in the crop then I probably shouldn't give it any more just yet. I'm hoping for some signs of improvement, doesn't seem to be getting any stronger or bigger.

I'd suggest to post a new thread asking the other senior members here some suggestions, including some pics of him especially the black spot that you were talking about. May be they can suggest some medicine or some special diet that may cure him. Right now, it seems that it's just surviving on whatever you're doing for him, though that's still a good sign but, I think, he'd show some growth, so that he can then eventually become stable. Best wishes for you and him.
