Normally I keep quail, but currently I just have 3 turkeys. I had ordered meat chicken hatching eggs and only 3 of 19 hatched, 5 had been smashed and scrambled in shipping and the box was beat up. One chicken ended up dying early on for seemingly no reason which I hear isn’t unusual for Cornish x meat birds. We ate the chickens and they were terrific, however much smaller than I expected, but even the dark meat was white.
So my friend has chickens and found a hidden nest after it was too cold for the hen to raise them outside, so she gave me the eggs to put in my incubator. I started with 8, 1 had no development, and two were late quitters, which I felt wasn’t bad considering we didn’t know how long she had sat on them before I got them. Yesterday 5 adorable chicks hatched. I went to buy dog food today and my brand had barely any on the shelves and the store told me that the company is unable to get the various meat ingredients and many flavors aren’t available. I had intended to take the chicks to the auction with my extra male turkey, but hubby is all about keeping them, even a rooster we aren’t supposed to have haha. He says worst case scenario we can feed the dogs eggs and rice if dog food becomes scarce. I’m excited to have some chickens, I’m building a large aviary for my turkeys, and I was planning an “airlock” so the kids could go thru, shut the door and then go thru another door before getting to the birds, to prevent escapes, but I think the airlock is gonna be expanded to a chicken pen.
Here are the chicks, they’re barnyard mixes, she has wanted fluffy calico bantams and had some genes in the possible mix for that, and some silky genes too.

The gray one is my favorite, it seems to have dark skin where it has gray:
Just thought I’d share my first real chickens, the meat birds don’t really count because we didn’t hug and cuddle them, and they were dinner before we knew it.
