My first official molt for 2017

I notice the roosters generally molt before the hens. Last year I started seeing some molting at the end of July. They continue usually until December. 80 some adult chickens take a while, with everyone doing their own thing, at their own time, and they put out a lot of feathers.

I definitely was surprised to see my old man rooster molting already, could be he's old and doesn't have the time to wait until later in the year.

I've seen a some adult feathers around that made me suspect it might be starting,
a couple from 4yo cockbird, the others not sure who.
I suppose that even tho it's only a couple weeks past solstice,
the day length is shortening.

could be he's old and doesn't have the time to wait until later in the year.
This theory has some credence, kind of funny :D

Yep, two of my Dominique hens are in the early stages of molting. Why, I don't know.... I suspect one of my 7 year old Black Australorps is starting, too.

It is good to hear I'm not the only one who's seeing some feathers flying. I, of course, am always hopeful for an early fall each year as I'm not a fan of summer, and the start of the molt to me is the beginning of the end of summer.
