I've never hatched eggs before, and we just had our first pip! I had no idea how emotional I'd be over this! I'M SO EXCITED!!

And sadly that is the other side of chickens. If you incubate there are times when you have to decide to help or not help. Helping a chick out can actually kill them because the process of them coming out of the egg actually gives them strength, kinda like the more you work out the stronger you become. If you don't help the chick out it may or may not die. Sometimes you can tell it is just too dry for the chick and you dampen the membrane or help them out. When I have a broody hen, I let the chips fall where they may and now I rarely help a chick out. Do not think for one second I do that easily. I don't. With chickens there is laughing AND crying. My heart is broken that you have to experience this sad side of it......I am very sad. Our little chick was so lively, peeping, kicking and rolling to get out. And then, a few minutes later, he was gone.
