Well, I was wondering if any poult's would hatch from my Eastern Wild hen. She is about 1- 1/2 years old and our first season with her. The set up she is currently in would prohibit her from getting her babies to food and water easily as the edges of her nest box are too high for them to get out.
By my calculations the first ones should have hatched a few days earlier, but just found one poult in with her that was already dry and has a few tips for the start of "her" wings. I presumed she may be 2 days old(?) from the looks of her. I had food and water there for mamma hen to feed to her but I don't think she did since the nest box has about a 6 inch high border about 6 inches so I took the poult out tonight and put it in the brooder. She drank well but hasn't eaten much yet. I will keep trying to get her to eat, but how long can she go without eating. I am hoping more hatch out soon as there are a lot more eggs under her and I don't want this poult to be lonely.
I plan on going out every couple of hours tonight to see if she'll eat. I just put her into the warmed brooder. It is at 100 degrees. she wants to be right next to the feeder probably because it's warm and feels comforting to be against something.
She's bright eyed and was chirping until see settled down to sleep.
I have given her a little sugar water and put a little bit of a powdered vitamin supplement in her water.I made a kind of mash with the powdered feed which I had to grind up because it had whole grains it it. It is my turkey grower feed, which I feed my other poults and just added hard boiled egg, crushed meal worms and sunflower heart pieces along with their feed and those ones are doing great (they are 10 weeks old and out on sand and grass). I will give her some mashed hard boiled egg tonight also.
ANYTHNG ELSE I SHOULD DO?
Oh,I also made the brooder a lot smaller by putting a divider in so she only has about a foot or so of immediate space so she stays under the heat but if she really wanted she could fly over the barricade which is about 3 inches high IF she wanted to get away from the heat lamp.
