Be careful with letting the little kids out in the yard. If it is out of chickens, it might try something else. Coyotes and wolves will try to take little kids.

I gave up on Free Range----just too many times I've had my chickens reduced by 90% or more. I would let them out sometimes for weeks or months with no problems, then Wham-bang a dog pack would slaughter them, a fox would make them disappear, or a coon would leave feather piles.
I built a large pasture run and now keep a varmint live trap primed.
