My first Quail. A mini blog.

My turner isn't turning.
I did a hard reset, which I was surprised to see only changed the Days to the original 17 and not the 18 I had changed it to for my second batch. My temp adjustment stayed at 100.5F and not 99.5 like the factory setting when it arrived. I would have thought all settings would have changed back to the factory settings.

But we'll see if that gets the egg turner turning. I can rotate it using the buttons, so I know it's not bound up.

It's good. It's rotating now.

I was wondering why when I pressed the menu button it was reading 00... I thought the instructions said it resets to a new incubation period once it is unplugged. And I unplugged it on something like day 21-22 after that pipped egg failed to hatch. So it should have reset to 18. It did last time...

Something I'll have to keep my eye on for future use. Maybe do a hard reset after each use.

My lone quail has made herself a little nest. I guess she doesn't like the box I put in there, as it always looks undisturbed.

I wonder if that is where I'll find my first egg?Meanwhile, the temps are supposed to be in the fifties all week with lows in the forties. And next week isn't looking much better. But my older hen has been alone too long. I'm going to move the others out there today.

Tough to corral four birds up, but I got them all in the box and transported them to the great outdoors.

This one, too, maybe. We'll call him booger for now, as he has something stuck to his nose.

Booger has a narrower "bib" I call it. You can see the hen markings, but they don't go all the way around under the chin.

But booger??? Clearly a hen beside him, but booger's speckles stop part way onto his front. Just not as pronounced as the other. Not as pretty. He has that rosy chest.

Finally! Hen number one comes outside to have a look once the others started chirping. It won't be long that I won't be able to tell the older hen from the younger hens. She just circled everybody and seemed pretty excited.

And I imagine this is that one that was by herself a lot in the brooder. Not solely by herself, but often enough that I noticed.

Everyone is in the inside section now. I imagine they just followed the older hen. It will be nice to see them outside again eating and drinking.

That's no bueno.
That means at best in a few weeks I'll have a 1:3 ratio.

Eating and drinking

These guys aren't as skittish around me and even the lawn mower doesn't seem to bother them.

Speaking of poor ratios, I just set new eggs because out of my first fourteen birds only FOUR were hens. I think the quail gods are laughing at us
