I'll admit it. I was a bit lazy at collecting my eggs when it was cold. One of the girls would lay on them every morning. At one point, maybe 3 weeks ago, I brought a batch of eggs in. They were probably about a week old at that point.

Today, I opened one for my dog and about died from the sight and smell of it. It was a muddy black color. The smell was intense, and I actually tasted it in the air. I began gagging immediately. I'm surprised I held it down. You know that smell when you leave dishes filled with water in the sink for a few days? It was like that x1000. Maybe a bit of gym shoes that have been sweated in then left in a locker for a month.

I never washed the eggs and left them on the counter. I'm assuming the egg must have had a crack, which caused it to rot. Something like this wouldn't happen just from being out or not collecting right away, right? That wouldn't happen from a chicken sitting on them for a few days?

Either way....I hope to not run into another rotten egg again soon. I would have taken a photo, but I had to dump that down the drain because I couldn't stop gagging from the smell and taste in the air.
