My First Set of Chick!

Hello Everyone,

I figured I would give a bit of an update.

Over the past year I have raised 6 EE and during the cold Ohio winters I lost 3 of them it. It was definitely sad but these 3 that I believe got a cold and were not strong enough to deal with the cold temperatures of Ohio's winters. I had a heat lamp in the coop keeping it around 50-60 depend on the weather outside. But the 3 chickens i lost i noticed even in warm weather they would not go outside and they never laid a single egg while the other 3 were laying all the same age.

On to a brighter note the other 3 chickens are alive well and laying beautiful green eggs. One of the egg in which I'm not sure how the poor girl gets them out as they are as round as a silver dollar. Also got my first "Odd Egg" it was a perfect circle about the size of a quarter..lol very interesting.

So with Preparations for year two i have decided to not only get 4 more egg layers (2 Barred Rocks & 2 Easter Eggers) but to also give meat birds a try. This will be a whole new adventure for me seeing that I have never butcher a chicken, but i have some butchering experience through my years of hunting. well wish me luck and here are the new Chicks.

I also will be posting pictures of my brooder which I made from an old Wardrobe.
