My first sinus infection

Question...? Over the years I have used Baytril shots in the breast. One of the birds stayed kind of down for a long time I had given it a number of Baytril shots in the breast . This bird had had shots of Baytril before .. now when the bird died I cut him open and skinned it All of the shots of baytril left their mark where they were given, even months before . They were large dark brown spots about the size of a quarter. I do not give Baytril shot in the breast anymore... Does the fact that it leaves permanent tissue damage in the breast bother anything ?? connerhills

Were the spots necrotic? I have seen this before with when I gave Tylan IM, and I have had Baytril injection site reactions in cats, but have yet to see them in birds that have had Baytil.

Where did you find the injectable Baytril? We adopted a chicken who developed a nasty sinus/eye infection 2 days later. It looked just like your pictures. She was on oral Baytril for 4 months (yes, you read that correctly) before it finally went away but not before giving it to another hen (GRRRRRRRR!) The injectable seems to work much faster!
Do a google search for enfloxil.

No. they were observed after I skinned the bird, I have heard of this before and wanted to see what this one was like ..., I have quit injection of any kind in the breast muscle . I am thinking that orally is a good way to go as it goes through their system. But subcutaneous may also cover all areas. ???? connerhills

My vets have told my not to give it by IM, but they claimed it's because it's too painful. The cats get it subcutaneously with a bolus of fluids, which is supposed to lesson the risk of the reaction, though it does still happen. I will give it orally if I'm not also tubing because giving it orally make them vomit sometimes and I'm afraid they will aspirate from the vomiting.

I try and avoid the breast if I can since both Baytril and Tylan are supposed to harm the muscle. It would be interesting to do a post mortem on a bird that has received subcutaneous shots to see if there were issues. I am always afraid that if I give orally they will throw it up and I will not see it.

The subcutaneous site reactions in cats I have seen don't worry me at all, they just get little scabs and it heals just fine.

These are picture of rabbits that I found:

Text with them says this "
Sterile abscess in a rabbit, after injection of enrofloxacin"

Other text on page says this:
"Skin irritation or formation of sterile abscesses after subcutaneous injection of antibiotics like penicillin or enrofloxacin (Baytril) is possible. When the antibiotic is dissolved in a water-based solution, e.g., enrofloxacin, the formation of sterile abscesses can be avoided by diluting the amount to be given by the same amount of a sterile saline solution. Beside sterile abscesses, the use of Baytril over longer periods of time may lead to muscle necrosis."

Not trying to make a point, just sharing info that I found.

FWIW, the reactions I have seen in cats look *exactly* like the rabbit pictures I found, but they Tylan reaction, that left a nasty hole in the breast muscle about an inch in diameter and about 1/4" deep... it never did heal correctly.

When I saw the first pic I thought it didn't look bad enough to have to cut out. When I first see a bird of mine that has that puffiness I give a shot and it goes away in a couple of days.

Obviously, the owner has had the problem for quite a while or there would not be a hard pellet of infection.

Good job Kathy!
