We just moved to a farm 3 months ago and decided to raise chickens. I diligently collected my eggs and this morning i see my first crack! I promise not to touch the eggs while they are hatching, just extremely excited and want to know how long this process takes and what i should be watching for.
Hatching can take a while. They may rest for hours and hours after making the first opening (a breathing hole). It is so exciting! Anyways, it is good to leave them alone. If you can see inside of the incubator than you can keep an eye on them. If any seem to be struggling (pecking at the shell but not making progress), keep a close eye on them. I have had to help some chicks from shells, but there is a delicate balance between too early (when they are weak and haven't absorbed their yolk or blood vessels) and too late (they die).
Not to make it sound like it will turn out bad, so don't panic, just thought I'd give you a heads up. If there are any problems I will do my best to assist.
It can take up to 24 hrs after they make that first crack, a pip. You'll probably start seeing more pips before that egg starts zipping. They rest a lot so it takes a lot of patience. Enjoy the show!!
