My first time with a broody hen

Hello all!

This Spring I purchased some breeding stock Silkies. Dad is a Blue Splash and mom is a white paint. She finally went broody for me on 5/2. She currently has 6 eggs under her.

I know it will soon be time to candle, but I have never done this before. What recommendations do you guys have and what should I look for?

Yes, bright light and a dark room is key. With white eggs, I find the flashlight on my phone to be sufficient provided I am standing in a closet. If you have never candled eggs before wait until they are least ten days into incubation. You should see veins all around the inside of the shell and movement.

Thank you for the info. Her eggs are a very light tan, almost off white. I can't wait to have a look inside, but I'm trying hard to wait.

She's 2 years old this year and has raised several clutches of chicks before. I just can not wait to see all the little fluff balls!

I have embryos!!!!! I quickly candled last night and at least 3 of 6 are growing. I'm going to spend more time tonight looking at them and trying to get a few pictures.
