My first try at a coop? ? ? ?

Crazy Mitch - te windows look good - I don't think a predator will get in those, and you have time to trim the interior later. What ype of door are you putting on? There is another good place to add ventilation....just something I am consider in for my coop, since mine faces south, I could easily cut out a panel low down that can swing up and lock down too...still figurin it out.
YEa this venting thing has me thinking. . .and making me even more CRaZy . . . hehehe :) I want to get it right.

I do have an oak door I picked out of the garbage. . .I was going to use (the door faces north) but I'm thinking of a home made door with screen for summer and a plywood face for winter? We will see?

Soooooo I have these areas I can vent the little triangle area at the peak at the north and south side of the coop. . . . I cut larger holes in each end

This is at the peak of the west wall. . .and I can cut a huge hole there and vent it! But I don't know what is the best way right now. I can add eves and vent through that? Or slats? But I don't want the wind coming directly into the coop? So do you put up a defuser board? Or something that will NOT allow a breeze/wind into the coop (winter) ?

Any thoughts of styles of vents (easy to build) would be greatly appreciated. . . . .

Thanks again for the link. . . .

and L7. . . . Killer coops. . . and HUGE. . . I don't have that much land! I love the pictures of your coops . . . inspirational!

Crazy Mitch.

i would get vents from hardware store that people put on shops and put one on top of door and two across the back at top here are some pics of vents i am talking about

You said you wanted to see them. LOL Here's another thats a vintage coop. I moved it & remodeled it & added the run. It was my first coop.

This is an old picture of it. I've remodeled even more. I added electricity, hot wire, & stronger wire. I have a few more coops if you want to see them.

Will this be enough? I did look at these in the store. I would have to get the metal ones. . . and add screen for the Critters? ? ? ?

Thanks I will go look at these.

Hot wire? Is that for predators? I like this one! BUT IT IS HUGE! You must have a ton of land.

Bella,
Are you venting your coop too? Can you post a picture? Are you new to chickens or just this site?

I will have something going soon .. . I have to finish this coop. . . . or are they never finished? Always tweaking here and there?

So will those vents work? Or do I need a bigger vent? I know that those vents can get costly? I saw the cheap plastic ones. . . but I don't think it would hold a screw let alone a hungry critter trying to get in the coop for some wings? ? ?

Has anyone had good luck with these vents (mentioned above) . . .I will go look in the store again and look again. . or at a salvage place.

We have two windows that open on the south side of the coop, plus we are putting in a venting fan at the top as our coop is a prairie design and is tall in the middle. On the east end will be venting like the ones shown in a reply here that you get from the hardware store. The wind here blows from the west, so the door to the coop can be opened to send a breeze into the coop and the air exit out the east vent. There is a small storage area in the front of the coop, then a wall and door made of framing and covered in chicken wire, so leaving the outside door ajar when possible will allow airflow through. It gets very hot here in the summer. the run attached to the coop is large and for the most part blocked from the heavy afternoon winds by a garden storage bldg. sh

I had a friend that used window shutters and fixed the louvers at a half-open angle and put screening on the inside. Then in the cold weather, he velcroed vinyl up to block the air with a layer of batting in between. Our coop has insulation, so a small light bulb keeps it warm when we shut the doors and windows. I always have the venting open.

No the coops are never done especially with an retired engineer for a husband! i will post pics later this week if the thunder storms stop. I hate going to in the lightning. :)

I have had chicken in the past, I love to sit and watch them. I am new to this site and joined when we re-entered clucking life!
