I've read the posts on fermented feed and it sounds like a good thing so I've tried it but haven't had much success. My flock doesn't like it
My taste testers are 4 call ducks, 2 mallard mutts and a cochin hen. They pick at it but would much prefer the dry grain. I've tried feeding it by itself and they'll eat enough to exist but no gusto and then it spoils. If I throw half of it out I doubt there is any cost savings nor is it good for the birds if they are not eating enough.
My inputs: Nutrena scratch and layer pellets-I add some each day. Water and a tbsp of ACV (I've tried with and without the ACV).
Cover loosely, stir every day. Add as much input as I take out every day.
I've tried keeping the mix wet (water always on top), and drier (I think it started to mold this way and started a new wetter batch)
Temperature: I keep it in a warm mud room-temps are probably about 80 during the day.
Mother: This is my big question-I do get a white scum on top. I've read this is mother and stir it back in. I'm wondering if this is actually mold hence causing my birds dislike for the feed? I'd hate to think I'm feeding them moldy food. I'm trying the wetter mix which I have to strain with a colander but still get the white scum on top.
So am I missing something here? Do I just have birds with no taste for fermented feed?
