My "Free" Eggs are costing me a FORTUNE! - ITS DONE!! pg 15 pics

Hi everyone, I love this thread! So many great recycled coops! I wanted to show mine off, I reused 2x4's from an old fence, floor boards were a wall in an old barn, and the roof came from an old cattle feeder. The things that I bought were hinges, a few latches, nails, and the biggest expense was the poultry wire. If you want to see the process I have details on my BYC page. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I do know it was under $150, chickens and all.

wow you folks are doing great with your low cost coops!!!

my own is progressing slowly, d@*n job keeps me from it five days a week

i was given lots of lumber that i can use for framing, and another coworker has some metal roofing and tar paper for the roof

but what i really need is a few days off either side of a weekend and some cooperation from the weather!

Ha ha, those numbers $$ sound about right, although we have spent a bit more. Swung by Home Depot and ended up buying a pre made shed, $2000.00 "Tuff Shed", got it home and I decided it wouldn't work., its now a tool shed. My hubby built a small coop for my rooster, Moe, after buying the windows and insulation we were in it about $600. Then I started getting the girls (my daughter has around 100 chickens) I just kept going to my daughters house/coop and picking ones in my color scheme...Lizzie my grand daughters first chicken raised from a day old, now 8 years (no eggs here, lol), Lacy, Lucy 1, Lily & Lindy. By now I see the coop is too small. We bought another shed from a gal moving, so after paying to have it delivered another 1K. Now I figure what with all the feed the squirrels and mice steal my eggs need to sell for $100.00 EACH. In March my daughter saw an ad for Lavender Orpingtons, so I now have 3 "Babe A Licious' ", that of course need their own coop and also of course I got 2 roosters and one hen, they lived in my house for a month and are now in the coop my hubby built. Then same Craigs list gal had 2 hens for sale...Lucky, Lucy 2 & Raven, Lucy 1 lives back at my daughters house and we have a total of 11 poultry. The summer project is to build an overhang over the entire coop area, we have it next to our big detached garage with metal roof (what was I thinking???), when it snowed, you guessed it, I spend a lot of time shoveling out their pens. So I need a huge over hang and refenced area with gates so they can roam free when we are home and hopefully we can keep out most of the squirrels and birds. The Babealiciouses aren't laying, so we get around 4 eggs a day, hey can't put a price on a good time, so I am now selling eggs for $50.00 ea. I actually sold 1 dozen last week and got $3.00. All my chickens are very tame and Moe is the man, he loves to be held.

I'm begin to be more and more thankful that mine hasnt cost me a single cent ...not trying to brag but.....it is what it is. If a coop and run would cost me even 300.00 it wouldnt be worth it in eggs to me. I'm not keeping them for eggs, just for pleasure and the eggs are a bonus. We dont eat them often at all in this house. But i have yet to pay for even a staple. WOW 1400 bucks??? really??? id have to choose like new furniture or something at that cost. Or a new fridge to match my new stove

Oh yea, I am a member of our local freecycle group and have been for years. I get A LOT of stuff from there. Craigslist is also my best friend. I post SOME of my buildings and other structures from using FREE and recycled items on POST #4.

I'll see you on the thread.

We are almost done with our coop too. The girls are 6 weeks old and NEED to get out! So far the plans from Purina have worked. Since I needed to modify where they say the door should go and where it would up caused a redesign of the inside.
I was lucky and put the word out that free lumber = free eggs. So far the only things I spent money on was the door hardware, the fencing and posts. Total $125.00.

Here are a few photos from start to almost finished.
