My friend hatched a duckling

It started a month ago when my friend (we met in university and keep in contact through Facebook) found an egg on her porch and started incubating it. On her Facebook she reported its progress. A couple of days ago it hatched, and now she has a baby wood duck (named Basil).

Although she loves ducks, and I should be happy for her, I'm concerned because I've heard ducks are rather high maintenance pets and I don't know if she has a pond for it to swim in. I don't think she knows how to take care of a duck. Also, if she hatched the egg the duck will think she's its mother. She might not be able to release it into the wild when it grows up.
You are sooooo busted................lol

What a cutie!!!I'm curious as to what Australia's laws are pertaining wild ducks. The US has strict laws protecting migratory waterfowl.

I just randomly came across this and i was only after reading telokas amazing story a week before lol. She has been amazing at helping basil without her there would be no basil.

A few years ago i had to do the same with two duck eggs they turned out to be mallards, they hatched they followed me everywhere i eventually put them outside into my large fenced in garden with the chickens for safety from foxes. They were there for a few weeks when i noticed that they were practicing flying(they had enough take off space as i have a big garden) this was most likely encouraged by them hearing the other mallards in our area as there is a lake just a few fields away from us (ireland)
One day i went out and there was only one left no feathers so i presumed no fox i then spotted him eating in the field behind the house. The other was desperate to join and i watched as he took off and just kept going. I was a bit sad but still happy for them :) . Then as i was feeding the chickens a week later they were both back with there beautiful male plumage fully developed! They ate with the chickens and were gone the next morning.

This kept happening for about five months either one or two of them would pop round every few days or weeks then eventually the visits got fewer as they got older and I haven't seen them since. If you ask me its super easy to release ducks if they want to go and can hear their own kind. Also P.S. the way your "friend" went about trying to " help" you was pretty crappy :-/ she really should have asked you first but i did get a great laugh out of finding this thread :)

I agree, pogmobum. (By the way, did you know that your iPhone autocorrect name is pig ovum? Bahaaaaaa!! It took me three attempts to get it to quit correcting me!). I have had wonderful luck releasing ducks into the "wild" here, (although the "wild" of my property is actually pretty cush)- they adapt wonderfully and actually stick around. Even the mallards don't leave. They fly away at times but always come back w/in a couple hours. Which I'm sure is because there are other ducks here who do not leave, and they're part of their flock too. I think if that weren't the case they would fly elsewhere and do fine.
