My friend is hatching for me.. using BLEACH?

My friend picked up 3 dozen local hatching eggs, and is hatching a dozen for me... but... I just talked to him and he was complaining that there was mold growing on the eggs, and that he'd wiped them down with a bleach mixture... he also claimed that they were growing inside, because he could see a round quarter sized blob in the middle of the eggs... think it was the yolk? am I going to get ANY chicks?

I've heard of people using a very diluted bleach & water mixture to dip the hatching eggs in before incuabtion. I tried it with my last hatch, since the leghorns decided to get poo all over the eggs. All the eggs are growing.

So based on that, as long as its a very diluted solution I think youll be fine. I think is 1 tsp of bleach to 1 gallon of water. I used about 2 1/2 times that.

I've never had eggs/incubators grow mold, but I have heard of some of the wooden cabinet incubators getting moldy in the corners.

Not only do I use a 10% bleach solution to dip my eggs in before setting them, and a natural air dry, no rinseing.

I use the same solution in my humidity tray and have for the past 20 years. It hasn't seemed to affect anything as far as hatching goes.

I just took the P-T testers class yesterday, they said use 1 TBSP to 2 1/2-gallons of water to dip the eggs. Do not submerse longer past a minute. I would clean as much off with either my hand or lightly sandpaper the poop off, then dip them for a couple of seconds. The water MUST BE between 105-110 degrees F so that none of the bacteria is forced into the eggs. It is warm enough to do that without effecting the viability of the egg. I would never have done this before taking this class, now I will do it with every dirty egg I get if I am going to set it.

SORRY, HAD MY LABEL WRONG!!!! IT IS 1 OUNCE OF BLEACH TO 2 1/2 GALLONS OF WATER!!!!!
I got to thinking last night that that really didn't sound right. I double checked and it is 1 oz. I apologize for the error.

10% is a lot stronger than what I use, but I do the same thing. A tablespoon of plain laundry bleach in a gallon of warm water. Soak for one minute exactly. And the same solution goes into my humidity pan.
