My funky golden comets

I would say she's a Golden Comet because we had one when I was a kid that looked like that (and the hatchery we got her from only sold Golden Comets and broilers.) Her name was Danger, because she crashed into everythng as she flew off the roost in the morning. But that's besides the point...

I wouldn't give up on her yet, if she's a last years "chick" she hasn't seen her first spring as an adult and some birds are late bloomers.

The weird thing is Danger had a very big comb like that too, although I think she laid.

They just like to keep us guessing!

You didn't say exactly when you got her from TSC. May? Earlier in April?

The reason I ask is that TSC normally tears down the baby chick bins long about late May. I find it very unusual that a Red hen wouldn't lay 90-100 eggs before New Years, given that birth date. Most sex links begin laying at 18-20 weeks.

I put such a pullet in isolation at about 22 weeks. If she lays in isolation, she's earned a reprieve. If she doesn't lay in isolation, with all the proper conditions of water, food and lighting then I have little hope she ever will.

My neighbor got 19 Cinnamon Queen hens and one rooster (a Cinnamon Queen is really the same thing as a Golden Comet). One of them was colored just like Useless. Useless seems to have the white undercolor, which would make her a Golden Comet, aka a Red Sexlink. Most of my neighbor's hens were colored like HLAC's other hen with the very long tail feather, which is the classic color of a Red Sexlink. But one of my neighbor's hens was a deep cherry red fading to a pure white tail, and another was almost pure white but with red ticking. Being a hybrid, Golden Comets can vary quite a lot in color.
