My girl is squeaking

After three days of a whispery squeak, her voice is a lot stronger this morning! Her biggest concern was her sister hogging the nesting box. I'm such a mother hen with my chickens and all my pets. I feel much better about Janet this morning. At least I know of a chicken vet in the area now. Thanks @JensChickies !

Glad she is getting better. Do you think maybe just strain from yelling at her sister hogging the nest? Here's hoping she gets back to normal so you can relax.

Thanks. It's always so hard when you see an animal who seems to be in distress and you can't help them. With her, she seemed normal in every other way, but when I looked up causes for a chicken losing her voice, it was all kinds of scary things, except they had other symptoms that she didn't have. I'm glad she's back to being her old loud self. lol.

The two of them get along very well, but they're very chatty in the mornings, whether they both are ready to use the nesting box or not. I don't know what caused her voice strain, but I can't imagine excessive heat, the dryness of the air and the poor air quality is good for them. But that's true for everyone in California right now.

Oh my girl is improving. I believe she had an impacted crop due to dehydration from it being sooo dang hot here. That is my gut feeling on it. I took her just to make sure there is no underlying problem. But she is improving so I'm happy about that.

Oh good. The heat has been awful, and the air quality doesn't help. It's just so dry. Janet always has a HUGE crop at night, so I bug her every morning making sure it's empty. Poor girl puts up with a lot from me.

I know the heat has been just terrible. What we do for our chickens! I never thought I would like chickens, but now I have 4! Lol

We have three dogs and a cat, so I wasn't sure if I'd feel like the chickens were pets, but I really grown to adore them, especially Janet. I got them at 4 and 5 weeks, to insure they were girls, so they're probably not as cuddly as if I raised them from chicks, but Janet, in particular, follows me everywhere and she lets me pet her (and massage her giant crop!). Penny is more skittish. The only time I can check her crop is when she's in the coop, locked in.

Even though they've never had crop issues, the size of Janets at night always freaks me out, so I not only massage it once in a while, I give them bread soaked in olive oil about once a week and watermelon on hot days as a way to get more water into them. I just ordered a Brite Tap Chicken waterer that can be attached to a cooler. I am sure people would think that's overkill for just two girls, but I spoil my fur children, why not the feathered ones? LOL.

This is awesome! Of course, I'd need a bucket that was cuter. The girls deserve that. We have a "gym" in our garage so we should make two, one for them and one for us.

We might actually get a little rain tomorrow. Fingers crossed!
