Is it too early for molting? I can see new feathers growing in and they're all acting normal. I'm getting eggs still everyday too...I have about 3-4 who's loosing feathers and some with bare bums! Grrrr...I feed them extra protein and they free range. Some are over a year and some are almost a year

Chickens go through their first adult molt at 18 months, and after that usually molt in the fall, but I have a hen who decided to molt this spring instead. It caused my dad quite a bit of alarm, because he went out to feed the chickens and saw white feathers scattered everywhere--he thought a fox had gotten his favorite girl! Much to relief, Winnie is alive and well, albeit a bit pathetic-looking

Poor Winnie's bald bum, though admittedly, it already looks better in this photo than it did a week prior. As you can see, you're not the only one with hens who decided to molt in spring!

To make matters worse, my Polish crested couldn't figure out what was going on and apparently pecked at the new feathers as they were coming in, so Winnie got to move to a different run while she finishes feathering out. A few days have passed since I took this photo, and she's already looking much better!
