One of my Pullets laid her first egg ever day before yesterday and nobody (pullets ) paid any attention, Yesterday when she went in to lay an egg. She had Bad boy (Roo) standing over her with his wing a little spread out over her. and behind them there were 14 Pullets all looking and trying to see around badboy to see what peaches was doing. I wouldn't have noticed but there were none of the older chicks in the run so I went to go check in the coop to see what was happening. It was halarious! No body was saying anthing loudly it was a bunch of quite little peeps. And everyone was ducking and bobbing up to see over or under badboy, It litterly looked like a show and tell class for kindergardeners! So whats the deal is this normal behavior? And is it normal or common behavior for a Roo to gaurd a girl while she is laying an egg? It was too funny! Sandy

Lots of roos do that, though not all, certainly. Sometimes a roo will help set on a nest, too! Guess they don't look at privacy quite like we do....

Funny critters.

I have an EE roo who will roll around in the nest boxes and make up nests for the girls too. Our banty brahma will stand guard over the girls from time to time and is soon as they start their egg cackling so does he. He's the proudest little papa. Our white leghorn, however, never participated when he was in with the girls.
