I live in Cape Town, South Africa. I live in a residential area, and am allowed 5 hens max. Well, when we started last year October, we started with 4 “hens”. One turned out to be a boy, so I returned him and exchanged for another red hen. Then, my cousin went to a farm for a week holiday, and brought back another hen for me (a Buff Orpington cross Black Australorp). We now had 5. My favorite breed is the Black Australorp and had to have one. Convinced my wife, and got my gorgeous Matilda from a breeder. We now had 6 hens. Then, Luna, my Buff Orpington cross Australorp goes broody. I felt sorry for her and got 12 eggs from a breeder of egg layers and Potch koekoeks (South african version of a Barred Rock). We agreed as a family that we would rehome all the chicks. Mommy hen was so good that she only left them on there own at 13 weeks. By this time, we had grown very fond of all of them. Of the babies, 8 hatched. 4 boys and 4 girls. I rehomed 3 boys. We felt that we could bring the remaining roo indoors at night so he doesn’t wake the neighbours. He is a BEAUTIFUL boy. So now we had 11 chickens. 10 girls and 1 boy. I had to rehome the boy this week due to teenage aggression. I was not going to stand for that with my girls. He is infact in a much better environment. So, our original plan was 4 hens, we now have 10. I would like to say that that’s the final number, but won’t - because you never know what the future holds🤣.
