Yesterday I noticed my one hen sitting with her eyes closed, I found an egg on the ground away from her so don't know if it was hers. All of the 6 chicks have been laying 6 eggs a day for months. they didn't slow down in the winter at all. They have always laid in the nest boxes. This afternoon when I went out, there was an egg by the door to the run. I had pulled some henbit for the girls and they raced to it, but not this one. There was another egg on the ground which was really discolored (multicolored) and the hen would not eat the grass at all. she went over to the spot where the egg was, (I had picked it up) She stood there with her eyes closed for several mins. then sat down with eyes closed. I sat outside the run and watched her, she never moved. I went back out after an hour and she was standing a little ways away, but with her eyes closed. She didn't move in the 5 mins I was watching her. I don't know whether I should take her to the vet in the morning or what. Any ideas???

I'm sorry you're having trouble.

Vet care would be best.

Do you have any photos of the discolored egg?

Feel her abdomen for any swelling, bloat, feeling of fullness. She may have an internal laying/reprodutive disorder like Egg Yolk Peritonitis, Salpingitis, Ascites, cancer or tumors, some symptoms include lethargy, difficulty walking, loss of appetite, weight loss. A vet can perform and xray to see if there are any egg masses in the abdomen and hopefully give a diagnosis. Also if you do see the vet, ask them to test a fresh poop sample to rule out Cocci or worm overload.

Try to keep her hydrated, offer her some poultry vitamins and see if she will eat for you.

Let us know how she is doing.
