I love that! So funny and actually very helpful to see them side by side. I pretty much have no doubt he's a boy, now.
I love geese, they're are such neat birds. I feel pretty lucky to have one.

Thanks Miss Lydia!

They are really neat birds. I am blessed to have 4 and they always make me laugh. Maybe sometime you'll get a friend for your gander.

Miss Lydia,
I would actually like to get him a companion, especially now that I know he's a he. The thing is that I'm worried about how I would ensure that the new goose is female. Should I get a young one or adult? Have any tips?

I think finding an adult female where I live may be difficult. Around here if word get's out that I'm looking people will come to my house wanting to sell theirs. Which is fine except that I may not know if they are male or female unless it drops an egg on my driveway!

Thank you so much for your advice!

Maybe ask around with friends you can trust, they may know someone who has a female, you could get a gosling but still wouldn't know the sex unless she was sexed by someone who knew what they were doing,so maybe a yearling if you can find one and they know for sure she is actually a she. or even older that 1 yr geese are long lived. 20 or more years.

Just wondering what the voice is like? is it high pitched and loud or low and quiet? high pitched -gander low- goose.
Hello...........I have the same problem. I have a goose that came to me as a trouble maker. The owner couldn't stand the fighting any longer. They had her for a year, The owner told me she had never laid and egg nor had she bred with any of the other geese.
I have had her a year and when we first got her she was a reg war lord..She would fight with everyone. One male jumped on her in the pond and it appeared as tho he bred her. From that moment on she would attack him every chance she got. So we figured she felt she had been violated and the fighting went on. She bonded with another male and they have been best friends for over a year now. But they never breed successfully. When the male tries to mount her she inturn jumps on his back and then runs off. She has not laid an egg in the 1 and 1/2 year we have had her.....but we attributed it to a stress factor from fighting so much. Now she has adopted 6 baby Canada goslings we bought from Stromberg hatchery and they follow her as they would a natural mother. She watches over them as if they were her own. The male acts like the father....but not as much as the female does. We don't know what to think of this...she has never laid an egg...never purposely bred with any of the other geese but acts like a female....I am perplexed on this one...would anyone know from the details here what she might be?...jean in Idaho

My Embden gander is a wonderful papa goose. He took all the Muscovy ducklings under his wing so to speak. Ganders are awesome parents and share rearing responsibilities just like their mate.

Please post some really good front view pics of your goose.

Sounds like a gander to me. Like Miss Lydia said, ganders are excellent at nurturing young goslings. Chances are your gander will pick his favorite girl from the group he is raising to be his mate next year.

Welcome to BYC.. so you don't know how old she is? I do want to say she is beautiful and I'm thinking probably a mix too. She sure has a beautiful place to live and sounds like she has the ideal home now. Could she possibly just be an older goose and maybe her laying years are behind her?and now she is just a nanny.

this is the only pic I have to date of Paddy who I have been thinking was a female...and her best friend Bowzer...in between are the Canada geese they adopted together. Now even tho Paddy has not laid an egg as yet...she has a high voice...where Bowzer has a low voice....jean ( Paddy is in back...Bowzer in front

Looking at the 2 together makes me think Bowzer is gander especially with the long neck but the low voice has be stumped.

Paddy looks thicker through the neck and not as long but if high pitched voice could still be a gander.

I remember when @Iain Utah had 2 ganders only and I think they took some goslings to raise it's been a while though so hopefully she'll say for sure.

But Most likely if you have females in the Canada goslings they will have mates ready and willing. Gorgeous flock there. :love

Thanks for your input..................Doesn't it follow that females have a high pitched voice and males are low...? He is quite aggressive and will not come to me when called, but rather show authority with lowered head if I approach his 6 Canada babies. Now with paddy, she is very calm and peaceful and the babies stay with her more than Bowzer who once in a while will wonder elsewhere. Paddy is what i would call gentle.......where Bowzer will go after the other male if he gets too close. Can stress prevent a female from laying eggs for a while? paddy was with a family that she just couldnt get use to so I took her. In the year and 1/2 that she has been with us she has calmed down considerably ...she was a war lord when she came here.

I have a question...........when she first got here, my other male who- has- a female mate, caught her in the pond and mounted her and bred her basically without her permission....since he acted as tho it was a success...wouldn't that indicate that Paddy is a girl?...or would a male goose do this to a new addition to the flock no matter what it was....... and still act as tho it was an enjoyable experience.?
Do geese smell or recognize the sex of another goose...and does it matter WHO they have sexual contact with.?

This happened only once and from that moment on Paddy had a seething hatred for that male and the activity that ensued ....and will not allow Bowzer to breed her. Now if she was a male wouldnt she try to mount someone...? This goose PADDY has never attempted to mount anyone....as if she has no gender. The lady who gave her to me told me before she Paddy got here that she had never seen Paddy breed either so she didnt know what Paddy was.///she told me that Paddy spent her time attacking everyone...so she asked me to take her.
Also ....Paddy and Bowzer are now beginging a courtship in the pond.they spend more time in there together dipping their heads....but each time Bowzer attempts to mount her she jumps up, jabs him a few times in the shoulder and jumps out of the pond. My picture window over looks the whole yard so i am able to see whats going on out there,....is there anything in what I have just written that would bring to light what they are....I am perplexed on this one.......
