My Canada Goose flew off today, we believe (and are hoping) with a flock of other geese. I know it is likely for the best and had prepared myself for this but am still heartbroken and will miss her dreadfully.

The KICKER is my JERK of a neighbor saw her this morning IN THE ROAD flying by his car and never bothered to call! I found this out early afternoon when I called him to notify him that she was missing and to keep an eye out and then his wife got nasty with my daughter when she called to get clarification of where they last saw her, calling her a brat and saying we were being unreasonable and irritating when my daughter mentioned that it would have been nice for him to have called when he first saw her so we could have gotten her from the road and out of harm. This is the same neighbor that I have STOPPED and called them on the phone, while holding their dog so they could let their dog back in the fence because they left it out AND called them when I saw a dog out that looked like theirs just in case. This is also the neighbor that called ME not that long ago at 11 ish at night to go to their house and check on their dogs as their housesitter was not answering their phone. I also coordinate farrier/vetwork with them for their horse and let him bring his horse over to get these things done__I even went over there recently in the hellish hot weather to drag his ill-mannered horse to my house to get his feet done because they were out of town. Ask me if any of THAT will happen again!!!!

We looked and called around all over and later this afternoon, my daughter was at the field and pond near where she was last seen and there was a large flock of geese that flew off. One answered when my daughter called and we are thinking that this was likely her (I am going with that belief anyway). I know it is for the best because she was always intended to be a wild goose and I had decided when I first took her on as a gosling that I would never clip her wings or pen her up and leave it up to her where she would want to be. I still miss her though and hope she does ok out in the wild and can keep up with the others, etc.

It just has NOT been a good day...

Like you, I choose to believe that she found herself a flock and is no longer lonely for her own kind. I rehabbed a lot of birds when I was a teenager and it was always bittersweet to release them.

Sorry you had such a bad day.

PS: but I hope you will get a nice pair of domestic geese in the spring. They are such wonderful creatures to have around.
