Can I ask a question though? How well of pets do they make? I want to get some... but am a little worried that they'll accidentelly run away one day... they're not too bright apparently. I'm defiantely willing to put oodles of time into them, since I hope to get babies over summer vacation and raise them, but I can't fence my yard. A little advice from a senor guinea owner? haha, thanks! sorry

In order for Guineas to be any kind of "pets" you will deffinatly need to put in a ton of time with them. That's about all though. Just a LOT of time, doing things like hand feeding, a bunch, sitting and holding and talking to them so they know that you aren't going to hurt them. It just takes a lot of time.

Thanks for the comments. I have only had guineas for a couple months, so my experience is limited. My understanding is they can be very tame with daily handling for long periods of time as keets. This isn't something I could do, and my main purpose is to have them range for bug control. We have ticks horrible in the spring and I want the guineas to help that. The guineas will let me touch them only when I feed them. If I sit on the ground they will climb on me looking for food. They are flighty birds. I plan to keep them penned up until spring to condition them to stick around. I also don't free feed, I take food out twice a day so they will come running to me when they see me. This will make it easier to gather them when free. I wouldn't call mine great pets though, I enjoy them, but have silkies for pets. Its pretty cool to see a flock of guineas fly to you to for food though! They fly really well!
