My head peck hen died suddenly

my head peck hen Sassy was found in the run late this morning, dead on her back, rigamortis already set, no signs of animal attack, (run is completely safe) no neck broken, nothing, like she just fell over backwards and passed away, she has been fine, eating, just finished her molting, and she was laying, no egg stuck in her, no signs of any sickness, I watch very closely, just in case they get sick, or anything. Does this happen often? Does anyone know what could cause this. I’ll miss her greatly, she was called Sassy for a good reason, she was head peck, I only have two left, how will the other two do without there lead?
 
Sorry for your loss. Yes sudden death can happen. Sometimes they will show slight symptoms of illness, but many chickens hide illness well. The only way to know what was wrong is to get a necropsy by the state vet. Refrigerate, but don’t freeze the body, and contact your state poultry lab in this link:
