Hi all

Tuesday I was in side when I heard this horrific screaming coming from the chicken pen. I ran to see what was going on. My daughters Muscovy drake was sitting on top of my Orpington hen. She had been sitting on eggs in the coop and for what ever reason he must have drug her off the nest and proceeded to attack her. By the time I got to her she was soaked from the wet grass and was not moving much. I quickly wrapped her up in a towel and quickly ran back to the house and proceeded to clean her up and take a look at her wounds. I was shocked to find on both of her sides the skin had been peeled away from her body. You could actually see meat, but there was no blood. I had no idea what to do, I think I was more upset then she was. I really thought she was not going to make it through the night even though she acted surprisingly ok after I cleaned her up. I sprayed her wounds with blue kote. It was all I had at the time. She was squawking and puffing up like all she wanted was to get back to her eggs. I also placed a piece of medical tape across her back to hold the skin to her sides loosely.Did I do the right thing. Did I boo-boo by using the blue kote. Should I continue to use the blue kote, or switch to Neosporin or even the swat for horses since there are fly's in the coop. Any advice would be appreciated. I took her back to the coop all she wanted to do was sit back on her eggs so I let her thinking this would be the least stressful place for her. I put chicken wire in front of her next box to close her in and gave her fresh water and food. So far she looks ok. I work all day so I don't know if she is drinking or eating, she is broody and they don't always eat or drink much. I tried to give a better look but she fights me tooth and nail. I guess she thinks I will take her eggs. The one thing I am worried about is when the babies hatch on 8/28 should I let her raise the babies or should I remove most of them to hand raise. The Muscovy has been removed.

There was a very similar post by wannahavehens a few days ago (similar scale of injury involving a chicken). You should check it out as there was a lot of discussion about how to dress the wounds etc
